Names of MPs who have taken short term advance loans from IPSA

Request

Since May's general election, please state which MPs have taken short term advance loans from IPSA. In each case, please state the value of each loan.

Response

IPSA holds the information that you request.

Under the MPs’ Scheme of Business Costs and Expenses (‘the Scheme’), each MP can apply for an interest-free advance loan of up to £4,000 to assist with cash-flow and help them cover any costs they incur that are allowed under the Scheme. These loans are repayable in full by the end of the Parliament.

In our annual publication of claims made by MPs over the financial year, we publish details of advance loans taken out by MPs. This provides details of advance loans outstanding at 31 March; data for 2014-15 also provides additional information regarding MPs who missed the deadline to repay advance loans. You can view this information on our website at the following address: http://www.parliamentary-standards.org.uk/AnnualisedData.aspx.

To locate this information, the following information may assist.

  1. Select financial year 2014-15.

  2. Click the link on the right-hand side for ‘other data’, and open the spreadsheet when prompted.

Information regarding arrangements for the 2015-16 financial year will be published on our website following the end of the year, in accordance with our stated publication policy. Section 22(1) of the FOIA states that information intended for future publication is exempt from release. We have considered whether the public interest in releasing the information outweighs the application of the exemption. It is our opinion that the public interest is best served by publishing a full and comparable list rather than on an ad hoc basis, as in this way a clear and complete set of information is published, avoiding any potential confusion. It is for this reason that the application of the exemption outweighs the public interest in disclosure at this stage.
