Impact of MPs' pay rise on candidates


This freedom of information request refers to the increase in MPs' salaries brought forward by IPSA

  1. Has IPSA made an assessment of what effect the salary increase will have on the quality, experience, or skill level of parliamentary candidates?

  2. Has IPSA made an assessment of what effect the salary increase will have on the number of people standing for parliament who otherwise would have chosen not to do so?

We did not carry out a specific assessment of the impact on candidates, but consideration was made throughout the review, and can be found in the various consultation documents and reports which are published on our website. For example, discussion on the impact of pay on the diversity of candidates can be found at page 24 of the July 2013 report, available via this link.

Over the course of the review, we have conducted three public consultations, in October 2012, July 2013 and June 2015. The consultation documents and reports relating to these consultations can be found at the link to the Pay and Pensions Home, above – and all contain consideration of the impact of remuneration on candidates alongside other factors.

The FOIA states that information that is accessible by other means is not subject to release. Therefore, as the information you have requested is already available on our website, it is exempt from disclosure under section 21 of the FOIA (information accessible to applicant by other means).
